Immaculate Heart of Mary Band, directed by Br. Peter Mary, MICM, (director) and Br. Anthony Marie, MICM, (percussion director) has been performing for 26 years. Students in Junior High are eligible to join and are urged to continue through to 12th grade. Opportunities for lessons on a variety of instruments are available to students, and group band practices are included in the school curriculum.
The Band marches in over 12 parades in the Boston area during the school year. It also performs an annual Spring Concert and Christmas Concert for family, friends and benefactors, as well as a number of charitable concerts for nursing homes and orphanages.
Since its first parade in Ayer, MA, in 1989, the Band has marched in approximately 200 parades, amounting to nearly 500 miles of parade routes. When IHM seniors complete six years of band (grades 7-12) over 60 parades have been marched, and 20 concerts performed. They have memorized over 15 pieces of marching music, which they have played over 1,000 times. Added to that, 75 pieces of concert music have been learned and performed in aproximately 300 hours of band time…not to mention the private practice hours!
Dedicating all their works to Our Blessed Mother, and with increased musical knowledge and an emphasis on discipline in marching and performance, the band experience is an excellent "physical re-enforcement" of the virtues and academic practices of the regular IHM school day.
We pray that all band members, past…present…and future, never forget their experiences with IHM Band and that they continue to bring Our Lady into the world of today by their good actions!
Prayer said before every Band practice:
"O Queen and commander of thy servant who humbly stands before thee, I give to thee all my works. Take and cleanse them and present them to my Sovereign Lord. I beg thee in turn to grant me holy desires. Thine I am and thine I wish to be. Therefore may my performances show Christ's strength in me in order to bring joy to thy Immaculate Heart, encouragement to the faithful, and good example for all who see me. I long to be an imitation of Him, the Light of the World, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Amen."
